Smithsonian Institution - Washington DC National Zoo.
The National Zoological Park is a part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum and research complex. The Smithsonian includes 18 museums and galleries, as well as the National Zoo. The words "National Zoo" represent a large, complex, and diverse organization with a multifaceted mission: demonstrate leadership in animal care, science, education, and sustainability. The National Zoo is far more than a place where people can see wild animals. We are a 163-acre zoological park set amid Rock Creek Park in the heart of Washington, D.C. Open to the public 364 days a year, we are home to 2,000 individual animals of nearly 400 different species. The Zoo is one of Washington's and the Smithsonian's most popular tourist destinations. We welcome up to two million visitors—from the local community, the country, and the rest of the world—every year, free of charge.
Hooded Merganser - males
It was cold and windy, so the male Hooded Mergansers were just floating, rather than erecting their crest as they often do when so close. Overcast day helped mute the intense whites, always a problem when photographing males in this species. Photo just barely sharp enough to capture the vermiculated pattern on the flank.

Bird Polyamory ("Roseate Trio Commemorative Door")
And I quote:
"In the summer of 1991, three roseate terns (naked, blue-white, incoloy [note: these terms describe the birds' leg bands]) nested together for the first time in ornithological history. Three roseate chicks (orange, green, yellow) were born on the retaining wall east of M2A. They all successfully fledged. Perhaps one day, they each may have two mates as well."
This is astounding, and wonderful, and super super cool.
The journal article "Roseate tern trio fledges three young" by Helen Hays, in the July 1993 edition of the journal of the American Ornithologists' Union ("The Auk"), has details. Included is that the trio was believed to be 2 females (both of whose eggs were present in the nest) and a male. Helen also notes in her article that under no circumstances had she ever seen 3 chicks survive to fledge out of the same roseate nest, and that for it to have happened in this nest required a very unique confluence of circumstances.
I believe I heard Helen say over dinner one night---if I'm not mistaken---that a very large percentage of the terns born on GGI do come back sooner or later for nesting. I wonder if the three chicks ever did? I'd love to know if there was ever any epilogue to this tale of three birds with two mommies.

Ospreys are one of our best known and best loved birds and the name Roy Dennis is not only synonymous with the successful return of the osprey to Scotland, but is also renowned for his international work with a variety of species. From the time he saw his first osprey, back in 1960, Roy has worked to help this magnificent raptor establish itself once more in a country where it had been hounded and persecuted to near-extinction over hundreds of years. This book tells the story not only of the osprey, but of the osprey watcher, following the bird's fortunes in Scotland, seeing its numbers rise from that single pair in the 1950s to close to 200 pairs today. From a look at its history in Scotland and the rest of the UK including the bad old days of egg thieves and the shooting of birds as specimens, it moves to the present day, with satellite radios allowing us to follow the every move of the osprey on its migration to Africa and back.Roy has pioneered the building of artificial nests for ospreys, which had been instrumental in increasing their numbers and range, as well as starting the first European trans-location taking chicks from their nests in the Highlands and releasing them at Rutland Water Nature Reserve in the Midlands. The book also covers the ecology of the osprey with many personal anecdotes and insights. Diary entries give a more immediate feel to the chapters, and the worldwide distribution of ospreys is enlivened by that sense of immediacy. Roy's writings, at a time when no one knew whether or not his lifetime's work would succeed, add a sense of history to this personal tale.
